An Ancestral Story
This story was given to my by my Aunt Evelyn Holt.
Kandie dear, you are an M.D. today.
How proud we are of you.
Your ancestors are proud too!
They stood in the shadow; they built your
Bridge. Now as you cross over
They want you to acknowledge their sacrifices,
Their commitment and their love for you.
Their children’s children child’s child.
Speak their names-
Henry McNeil and Eliza Ann Thompson
Hal(Antney) Anthony and Rena Allen
Plummer McNeal and Vinnie Antney
Pompey Hinton and Cloie Collins
James While and Cora Hughes
Emmanuel McDonald and Effie Hinton
Lewis James White and Idella McDonald
John Henry McNeal and Celestine White
Louvenia McNeal and Amell Stovall
Be Proud! They were strong! They survived.
They are the beacon of your past and of your future—
They shed light on your paths. They showed you the way.
They led you through the Red Sea. They are your Moses.
Dance the war dance of the Indians,
Dance the tribal dance of the Africans
Sing the hallelujah chorus.
These are your proud ancestors
Who rose up from Africa and America.
From the Carolinas and Georgia, from Alabama
And Mississippi,
You are the native daughter !
Amen
